Portugal has solidified its position as the largest exporter of medicinal cannabis in Europe and the second-largest globally, behind only Canada.

Infarmed — the National Authority of Medicines and Health Products in Portugal — has published an update on the development of the medicinal cannabis industry in Portugal.

In this way, this document confirms the country’s role as a European leader and one of the key global players in medicinal cannabis exportation, reaffirming Portugal’s strategic position in this growing market.

 

Expansion of Medicinal Cannabis Companies in 2024

The number of licensed companies in the medicinal cannabis sector in Portugal has grown significantly. In addition, data from 2024 shows:

  • Cultivation: 37 licensed companies
  • Manufacturing: 23 licensed companies
  • Import and Export: 47 licensed companies
  • Distribution: 13 licensed companies

 

Companies in the Licensing Process

It’s important to highlight that growth in this sector continues to be strong, with several companies in the decision phase or awaiting Infarmed’s inspection for final licensing. Currently, Portugal has:

  • 94 companies in the cultivation licensing process
  • 39 companies in processing
  • 100 companies in import and export
  • 20 companies in distribution

Additionally, 125 companies are in phase 2 of the licensing process, with the necessary documentation to proceed with their operations in Portugal.
